Happy (Not So) New Year!

03/01/2019 by DeAndre No Comments

It’s effin 2019, Black History Month has had it’s moment, and now here we are in March.

Let that marinate people…MARCH!!!

I can hardly believe it and yessss I know it’s been a hot minute since I last dropped a line but let me tell you, life has been nuts. I can’t complain but it’s been quite different from anything I’ve ever experienced.

I’ve been doing so much that by the end of the week, I’m generally left wondering where the time has gone, where to even begin restarting my creative work and how to maintain consistency. I thought I’d be doing all the things since I don’t have many distractions here. Shoot, I even thought I was going to be writing you people like 3 times a week, but then life was like NOPE…#NewJobNewYou girl. So I stopped trying to force what didn’t feel natural and I surrendered to being present in my experience here.

As you can imagine, it’s been a major adjustment, picking up and moving to Cali from Texas. And I honestly think I’ll feel more settled after this first year is up but at least I can say I’m getting used to my new gig, and raising my adorable puppy Cookie the CEO (named after Tim Cook). Yes it’s a funny story on how I selected his name, we’ll talk about it later. Anywho, this white little floofball has managed to take up the free time I thought I had so now life is even more full. As we speak, he’s spread all of his toys across my living room and has literally taken over. When I move, he moves. When he sneezes, it’s usually in my face. When I’m not keeping a close eye on him, he’s either making something a fire hydrant or into who knows what. I don’t have a life anymore. I might even be telling people I’m a single Black mother in Silicon Valley at this point. They totally know I’m joking btw…Well, hopefully.

Ok, what else can I think…Oh! I made two trips down to Houston in November and December last year for my cousin’s wedding and then for the holiday break. Let’s first start off with how amazing it was to have a proper break. Geez I didn’t know what I was missing! It was definitely a nice change up, going back home, but definitely interesting staying there after being in California for a bit. Of course I loved being with my family and friends but I realized there was absolutely nothing left for me outside of my familial life. I tried EVERYTHING in Texas and nothing really stuck for me. I did music, was on the scene, went to the best places, dated the most interesting people, had the BEST of friends but I never really built the way I knew I could. By the end of the trip, I realized it was time for a change, and that’s why I left for California. I had to take a leap of faith, now look at me…new city, new job, new life–new outlook.

Anywho, all is well and I have so much stuff to share. In the mean time, here is a blip of my life from around October to February, presented to you wonderful people in “thumbnails” until I can figure out this whole updated blog platform lol! Talk soon. <3

Holiday! How I Spent Thanksgiving

12/03/2017 by DeAndre No Comments

So it has begun friends.

It’s already been a over a week in but the time of turkey, dressing, crazy decorative lighting, overly played Christmas songs and wild family shenanigans has been ushered in by the November food fest we call Thanksgiving. Also let’s not forget the ever anticipated lip-syncing extravaganza that took over the streets of New Your City, a la the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.

Speaking of the parade, 1. I’d personally LOVE to do it, it’s like a right of passage for any artist, 2. I think my cousin got to perform with the Prairie View A&M marching band. That’s pretty cool and yes I’m low-key jelly. It’s ok though, my time to shine will happen sooner than later – even if I have to jack a Sesame Street float and hold Elmo hostage. That just got dark real quick…I didn’t mean it. I love me a lil Elmo’s World.

Anywho, Thanksgiving came and went, and it was different for me this go round. It was definitely slower and super chill. I enjoyed seeing everyone and hanging with my people but I liked stepping back a bit too. Oh, and there was the food! Anyone who knows me, knows I ate everything I could. My best friend Adrienne, who I generally refer to as Adra, cooked her booty off! I probably should have taken more pictures, but I also decided to try and live in the moment. I’m finding the balance in all of this social media jazz but seriously, it’s hard to look fab when you’re eating like it’s the Last Supper and you’re borderline ready to pop that one top jean button. Don’t pretend like you’re not guilty of a little glutton.

KoKo, Dee and Me!

It was so fun though. The week started with us celebrating my girl Korlynn aka KoKo’s birthday, then going out for Ethiopian food later in the week and ending with a mini baecation as the kids say. Yeah, you read right and no I won’t dive into it now. Maybe later.

Lucy Ethiopian’s Qinttot No. 4

Well enough about me. How was your Turkey Day and are you ready for Christmas? I know I’m not. What I do know is we should all take a moment to reflect in this season of gratefulness and just throw out some positive vibes. It’s time to set up for the the new year and really make a splash in our world. <3

Happy 4th!

07/05/2017 by DeAndre No Comments

Happy 4th of July good people! I’m grateful for freedoms I get to experience in this country but will never forget the difficult past of my people… This is the complexity of being a minority in America and specifically (in my case) Black in America. There are some things we will always have different perspectives on but that’s the beauty of cultural experience. We’ll always have something to share and exchange with those willing to listen. Today I celebrate the future of freedom. <3

What Freedom Looks Like

06/19/2017 by DeAndre No Comments

This is what freedom looks like…

It’s full of gratefulness and joy. I always think on what it must have felt like June 19, 1865 when my ancestors learned they would be free. We all knew it didn’t look perfect then and it surely doesn’t look perfect now but we were finally able to rebuild our families, consider our futures outside a plantation, think about what we wanted our lives to look like outside of being a slave to someone else’s businesses, wants, and needs.

As a woman, I reflect on being able to have more control of my body and sexuality. I don’t have an owner beating me or abusing me sexually, and don’t have to live through the emotional turmoil of bearing their children. My body is more mine than my ancestors ever got to experience. I don’t take my freedom lightly being a Black Woman in America. And even though things are still rough now, I’m so grateful to the people who came before me. And I celebrate the joy they must have felt, knowing their lives would change forever.

Happy Juneteenth good people. We gon’ be alright! <3
